The Academician Makhmud Mirzaev Scientific-research institute of Horticulture, Viticulture and Wine-making was organized on the base of the Turkestan Agricultural Experimental Station originally began to work not only on gardening and vine-growing, but on other branches, too: cotton-growing, vegetable- growing, fiber crops, rice, grain farming and stern. On the bases of carried out works by the station afterwards there were organized new scientific institutions-the branches of science of the experimental station, which sprung up Institute named after R.R.Shreder has ton the ancestor of almost all the network of scientific institutions on agriculture, which have been functioning at present in Uzbekistan. This is the important role of the Institute in the history of agricultural sciences in Uzbekistan and in Central Asia.
R.R. Shreder devoted 42 years of his life to the development of agriculture, working as a director and a scientific supervisor of the Turkestan Agricultural Experimental Station, which in 1928 was named after his name for his great merits to the development of sciences on agriculture and other branches of agriculture. In 2013 Institute renamed by Academician Makhmud Mirzaev.
The development of the Institute during more than 50 years from 1949 up to 2000 has been connected with the name of Academician Mirzaev M.M. the disciple and follower of Academician R.R. Shreder.
The development of the Institute includes some stages. The first stage is 1956-1957. According to the decision of the Government of Uzbekistan all the scientific Institutions, which had been engaged in gardening and viticulture were transferred to the Institute. This gave possibility to carry out scientific research complexly in different ecological conditions and bring the science nearer for needs of production.
The second stage — the beginning of the 60th, when the Institute was given all the fruit-vines nursery gardens of the Republic for the cultivating young plants of fruits and vines.
With the aim of forming the new technique for the specific soil-climatic conditions of Uzbekistan for carrying out of many important agromethods for taking care of vine gardens by the decisions of the Government there had been formed a special design office attached to the Institute by the end of 60th, then the experimental plant on producing special machines for the gardening and viticulture. This helped to supply the fruiter and viticulture farms of Uzbekistan with the new type of modern technique, which helped further progress of gardening and viticulture.
The rich collection of fruiters and grapes consists of: 23 fruiters more than 4 thousand of sort samples, out of them 1560 varieties of pome fruits (apples, pears, quinces), apricot — 320 varieties, 1055 varieties of grapes, out of them 450 local varieties of national plant breeding, berry crops (strawberries, raspberries, currants) — 166 varieties, nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts) - 112 varieties, subtropical and citrus plants — 260 varieties.
Up to the formation of the network of Scientific institutions, scientific research works were carried out mostly on the selection and agrotechniques of some fruiters.
From the time when there were organized scientific institutions along the zones, the researches were carried out with the wide collection of fruiters — apricot, citrus (Lemon, orange, tangerine and others) subtropical cultures- pomegranate, eastern persimmon, unabi; berry plantations-currants, raspberries, blackberries and so on.
Uzbekistan possesses enormous sorts of varieties of fruits, berry plantations and vines. These sorts were created by century-old national selections. Together with this increasing needs of the people for fruits, and also demands for food industry dictated the foundation of new sorts with improved qualities.
During the last 50 years there have been founded more than 150 new sorts of fruit-berry, subtropical plants and vines. At present 40 new and 18 recommended sorts of fruiters, berry, nut-fruiters, subtropical cultures and vines were included into the State register by the Institute.
The main purpose of the selection of fruiters and grapes in Uzbekistan is the creation of new sorts with high productivity and good quality of production, winter and dry stability, various ripening time, with high freshness (for non-stop supply of fresh fruits during the year).
At the same time with creation of sorts for the valley zones a great attention is paid to the creation of sorts for the land which is not enough supplied by irrigation (gallium, salty soils), and also time-serving for the condition of sharp continental climate, high summer temperature and dry winds.
A great attention is paid to the researches on the problems of unused lands for gardening and vines on highlands and foothill zones, as one of the important reserves of increasing the production of fruits and grapes.
On highland and foothill zones where there are many man-power resources, there may be cultivated valuable table wine sorts of grapes, apple- trees, pears, plums, nut, almond-trees and so on. On mountainous regions there may be cultivated gardening and viticulture as raw resources of wine- making and fruit-processing industry and dry fruit production.
The scientists of the Institute have worked out the technology of gardening on the dwarfish stocks. Average productivity of gardens on these stocks is 18-20 t/ha or 5-6 t/ha more in comparison with ordinary stocks.
For different zones of Uzbekistan there has been worked out the dripping method of watering, in this, saving of water is 35-40 %. Especially the effective dripping method of watering on the declined lands, where productivity of grapes makes up from 9 up to 17 t/ha.
By the scientists of the Institute there has been worked out and recommended simple and possible ways of increasing of fertile soil in gardens—this usage of sideral cultivated-rape, pea, Vostok-55, ground and other siderites which accumulate green mass up to 35-40 ton per hectare.
For obtaining of high-quality products there have been worked out integrated and biological measures of pest control and illness of gardens and vines.
There have been worked out and recommended the effective ways of tillage of soil and applying of fertilizers, which increase crops of fruits and grapes up to 2.5-3.5 t/ha.
The important task is increasing production of high-quality dried fruits and currants on the level of world standard.
There has been worked out a progressive method of drying fruits and grapes by using mechanized drying rooms.
On wine-making there have been recommended the best technical sorts for each zone with the aim of getting high-quality chatean wine.
The best zones on producing table and sparkling wines are conditionally irrigated lands of foothill and mountainous regions.
By the branches of the Institute there were created 10 new grades of wine, out of which 3 grades were awarded the gold medals at the international competitions of wines in Hungary, Bulgaria and Germany.
New varieties of fruit, berry, nut and grape of the Institute of Breeding and its scientific Institutions are being cultivated in the countries of Central Asia, in the Caucasus countries, in Russia, Ukraine, Crimea, India, Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Rumania, USA and in other countries.
The Institute and its branches every year produce more than 6 million seedling of fruit, subtropical crops also flowers and forest ornamentals. The demands of the farms of the Republic in seedling are being supplied completely.
